Sudeley Castle
Winchcombe Nr. Cheltenham
Sudeley Castle sits nestled in the Cotswold Hills, surrounded by 1200 acres of grounds, award-winning gardens and historic medieval ruins.
Sudeley has passed in and out of royal hands many times throughout the centuries, notably home to Queen Katherine Parr, sixth wife of Henry VIII, who is buried in the chapel of St Mary at Sudeley. It has also been visited by Queen Elizabeth I, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Besieged by Cromwell’s troops, Sudeley was restored in the19th century by the Dent brothers with their fortunes from the glove trade. Today Sudeley is the home of Lord and Lady Ashcombe, Henry and Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst and their respective families.
Sudeley’s glorious gardens are amongst the very best in England, from the centrepiece Queens Garden, billowing with hundreds of varieties of old fashioned roses, to the herbal healing garden which is being introduced for the 2011 season. Various collections give a fascinating insight into the lives of Sudeley’s
former residents, including Katherine Parr’s prayer book and the host of curious objects collected by Emma Dent, the Victorian Chatelaine of Sudeley. Guided tours of the private apartments are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Sudeley boasts a fabulous children’s play area with wooden fort, slide and zip wire, set in a family picnic area. Suitable for children 5 years or over.
