Your visit starts in the courtyard, with its massive gates, built so that escape was all but impossible. Soon you will join the other miserable convicts for a tour of your new surroundings - and as you enter the jail itself, you suddenly realise just how terrifying an ordeal it must have been to face life as a prisoner, as just a number.
