Ilchester, Somerset

Fleet Air Arm Museum

The Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton houses Europe's largest collection of naval aircraft. Occupying four enormous hangars and a climate controlled storage hangar, the museum has over ninety aircraft from the remains of the very first aircraft to have taken part in naval battle (the Short 184 in 1916) to Harriers, Buccaneers and a Phantom strike fighter, and if you have wondered what a nuclear bomb looks like, you'll find one of those too! Experience what life is like on the busy flight deck of HMS Ark Royal.

You'll arrive onto the flight deck from a simulated flight in a Wessex helicopter. You'll be among ten aircraft, and at either end of the flight deck enormous projection screens show a dramatic take off and landing sequence so you'll feel you are really at sea. In addition to the naval aircraft, the Fleet Air Arm Museum has the first British built Concorde. You can go on board and marvel at the 1960's technology, which made this aircraft fly at more than twice the speed of sound. There's a shop, restaurant and children's adventure play area. In fact, the museum is so large you will need around four hours to begin to do it justice.
