Skidby

Skidby Windmill & Museum of East Riding Rural Life
Built in 1821, Skidby Windmill has been grinding grain almost continually for nearly two centuries! The Wolds were the 'bread basket' of Yorkshire, and in the last century, over 200 corn windmills dominated the landscape. Agricultural depression and changingtechnology led to the closure of most of these bythe end of the 19th century... now only Skidby remains at work. For centuries, the Wolds have been devoted to growing grain. At the Museum of East Riding Rural Life, you can explore the history of the farming landscape and its village communities, told in their own words by the people who worked and lived on the land. From the horse-drawn ploughs which prepared the land in winter, to the woodenflails used to thresh the wheat grain from the chaff, the f arming year is chronicled through historic implements and fascinating photographs.
